HistoryNet Lease Cheesecake Factory Properties

The Cheesecake Factory began in Detroit, Michigan in the 1940s with a simple and unexpected chance. Evelyn Overton saw a recipe in a local newspaper that inspired her ‘original’ Cheesecake recipe. Encouraged by the reception she got for her excellent Cheesecakes, she decided to open a small Cheesecake shop. Her family commitments limited the shop to function out of the basement kitchen where she had moved all her baking supplies.

By 1972, Evelyn, along with her husband, Overton packed up their things and moved to Los Angeles, deciding to make a finite attempt at owning their own business. With their personal savings, they opened The Cheesecake Factory Bakery that began selling cheesecakes to restaurants throughout Los Angeles. The increase in demand soon had Evelyn making 20 varieties of cheesecakes. A chance taken by David, a son of the couple to open a restaurant that showcased his mother’s selection of cheesecakes changed their destiny.

The intuitive move based on the assumption that the guests would love an extensive desserts menu worked well. In 1978, the first The Cheesecake Factory Restaurant began in Beverly Hills, California. It was an immediate, roaring success and soon grew to a great size. There are now 200 The Cheesecake Factory Restaurants spread all over the country and it is a testament to the Overton’s commitment to quality and spirit of innovation and hard work.
