History

Circle K stores are the largest company owned convenience store chain in the US since the 1980s. Fred Hervey, entrepreneur, purchased three Kay’s Food Stores in El Paso, Texas and named them Circle K Food Stores Inc. From there it spread to New Mexico and Arizona.

Circle K franchise properties quickly spread by acquisitions over the next few decades and by 1975, there were 1000 Circle K stores across the US. Circle K made its presence known in the international market in 1979, from Japan and then on to the rest of the world.

Circle K has been successful in the convenience retailing industry over 6 decades from the humble beginning of three stores in El Paso, Texas. It grew even more since 1999, when the franchise programme came in, that supported operators looking to build a business with a leading store brand. Circle K is now owned by Alimentation Couche-Tard and is present in over 20 countries.
