How it began?
It all began as a currency-issuing and discount bank, Banco de Bilbao was sponsored to creation by the Spanish Board of Trade and was reigning as the only bank in that region of Spain. The law was passed in 1872 which resulted in the creation of Banco Hipotecario (BHE) for the purpose of long – term loans for property purchases. The activities of the bank expanded from just being commercial to contributing to the industrial sector. 1902 saw the merger of Banco de Bilbao and Banco del Comercio.
1999 witnessed the merger of BBV and Argentaria and the emerging bank, BBVA Compass Bank now had the advantages of the bigger size, stronger capital base as well as good financial structure and geographic diversification.
