How it originated?

In 1939, J.L. Turner founded Dollar Tree as J.L. Turner and Son, Wholesale. The company was incorporated as a Kentucky corporation under the name J.L. Turner & Son, Inc. in 1955. This was the time when the first Dollar General store was opened. The name of the store was changed to Dollar General Corporation in 1968 and reincorporated in 1998 as a Tennessee corporation. From 1968 to July 2007, their common stock was publicly traded. After that, they merged with an entity controlled by investment funds affiliated with Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co. L.P., or KKR. In November 2009, their common stock again became publicly traded, and in December 2013 the entity controlled by investment funds affiliated with KKR sold its remaining shares of their common stock.
