The Origin

In the year 1960, Tom Monaghan, along with his brother James acquired a small pizza store in DomiNick’s in Ypsilanti, Michigan. It secured the deal with down payment of $500 and borrowed around $900 for the corporate store. They planned to schedule their working hours separately but James was not ready to quit his full time job as a postman to meet the needs of new business. James traded his half business within 8 months for Volkswagen Beetle to Tom that they used pizza deliveries.

By the year 1965, Tom opened to more pizzerias and has three locations in same area. Monaghan was looking forwards to share same branding with the stores but original owner was not ready for them to use his DomiNick’s name. One day, an employee suggested a new name “Domino’s” after returning from pizza delivery. Immediately, Monaghan caught up the idea and officially titled it as Domino’s Pizza, Inc. Domino’s launched its first store in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada outside US on May 1983. The company had seen such a rapid growth that it also opened its 1000th store the same year.

Originally, the logo had 3 dots, which represent 3 stores operating in 1965. Monaghan added another dot when they add a new store. Since Domino’s has seen rapid growth, the idea faded away quickly. It opened its first Domino’s Pizza property in the year 1967 and the company expanded to whopping 200 stores in 1978.
