Fresh & Easy – The Grocery outlet with a difference

In 2007, this company was born with its headquarters in California, El Segundo. It is a part of retailing industry and was formerly a subsidiary of the third largest retailer in the world, Tesco that has its roots in United Kingdom. This grocery store gradually expanded its chains in California, Arizona and Nevada. Moreover, the Fresh & Easy real estate is fresh enough to be bought by smart investors.

Current Condition

The company ventured into selling general merchandise and groceries in United States through its various outlets in 2015 and filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in the same year. Origin and the course

Tesco, a UK based retailer dreamt of setting up an empire in USA, which they actually began in 2007. In their mind, they had planned a rapid growth but after the first store was opened, the process stopped and again in 2008, the work progressed. The company led its foundation in the states of Nevada, Arizona and California and had as many as 200 stores when Tesco decided to pull out in 2012-2013. The amount of sum reported for this was 1.2 billion Euros. Every fiscal year Tesco suffered huge amounts of loses, eg- $208 (2008/9), $253 (2009/10) in millions.

Then, in the September of 2013, the transference of ownership took place and Ron Burkle who owns supermarket became the new owner. But the Yucaipa Companies failed to provide umbrella to the Fresh & Easy as in the next month the company filed for a bankruptcy case in US court. Huge amount of loss was incurred which was visible when in 2015 again another case was filed after a few days of shutting the stores down.
