The Origin
In 1940, two brothers Maurice and Richard McDonald started a restaurant business in San Bernardino, California. In 1948, they introduced the “Speedee Service System” which further promoted the core philosophies of fast food restaurant that had been put into practice already by the White Castle hamburger around 2 decades earlier. In March 1953, the first McDonald’s was opened in Phoenix, Arizona. Speedee was a McDonald’s mascot with a chef hat over the top of hamburger shaped head. By 1967, Ronald McDonald eventually replaced Speedee when it first filed a trademark on a man like a clown with puffed off costume legs.
On May 4, 1961, US trademark was first filed by McDonald’s on “McDonald’s” with “Drive-In Restaurant Services”, which keeps to be renewed by the end of December 2009. The same year, company also filed a trademark of the logo on double-arched overlapping “M” symbol. The company literally exudes globalization having reach in several international markets and spreading the American way of life.
Today, McDonald’s restaurants are operating in around 118 territories and countries across the world and serving over 68 million customers daily. The revenues of McDonald’s Corp come from the royalties, rent and fees incurred by franchisees along with sales in restaurants operated by the company. In the year 2012, the company witnessed over $27.5 billion of annual revenues and $5.5 billion of profits. According to a BBC report in 2012, McDonald’s is the second largest private employer in the world – behind Walmart (1.9 million people), 1.5 million of those who work for franchises.
McDonald’s offers cheeseburgers, hamburgers, French fries, chicken items, breakfast items, shakes, soft drinks, and desserts. When responding to the obesity trends in the western countries and facing criticism over the health guidelines, the company changed its menu and added healthier alternatives like wraps, salads and fruit.
