Walgreens Company, a.k.a. Walgreen Boots Alliance, Inc. (NASDAQ: WBA) is the No.1 American drug retail chain. As of 31st May 2014, Walgreen operated 8217 retail stores in 50 states, Puerto Rico, District of Columbia, and the Virgin Islands. The Walgreens is based in Chicago, Illinois in the year 1901. The company expected to acquire the rest of 55% of Alliance Boots shares in 2014. Under the terms, the companies merged and formed a new giant, Walgreens Boots Alliance, Inc., on 31st December 2014. Recently, the shares of Walgreens Boots Alliance dropped when it posted the revenue, which fell short of the projections of analysts. The retail chain posted the growth of 2.4% of revenue to $29.5 billion for third financial quarter ended in the month of May, as stated in Wednesday. According to analysts by Bloomberg, the average sales estimated was $29.7 in this year. The shares closed by 2.4% to $81.55 in New York. With a lot of drug prescriptions filled at the pharmacies of the company, the biggest operation rose up to 3.9% to 235 million in sales of convenience products, including makeup, toothpaste, food and soap, through its Walgreen Co properties.

The revenue of the company was hurt due to pressure from payers to reduce cost of drugs along with the efforts of the company to improve sales at reduced prices, according to a Morningstar Inc.’s analyst. The company is however looking forward to increase sales through discounts offered in Walgreen Co investment property.

Walgreens – The Origin

In 1901, Walgreen was started as a small 50×30 ft. neighborhood drugstore. It was a prominent pharmacy in its neighborhood in a town Dixon. Eventually, it became one of the most reputed American corporations. Charles R. Walgreen, Sr. was a Galesburg resident who started the pharmacy store on Cottage Grove and Bowen Awe in Chicago. He was the man behind Walgreen Co corporate franchise.

By 1913, the company had grown to launch four stores on South side of Chicago. In 1915, he opened his fifth store. In 1916, he opened four more stores. By 1920, the chain has total of 20 stores. Due to prohibition of alcohol in 1920, Walgreens had most successful time. Walgreens sold prescription whiskey to the customers.

In the year 1922, the company launched malted milkshake and established ice cream plants. It started opening stores out of plush locations next year. The company enjoyed $1,200,000 of total sales from 44 stores and it has expanded to Missouri, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. With annual sales of $4,000,000, the company had total of 397 stores by 1930. Currently, the portfolio of the company includes business and retail brands like Duane Reade, Walgreens, Alliance Healthcare and Boots along with beauty product and health care brands like Botanics, No7, Soap & Gilory and Liz Earle. Walgreens Boots Alliance was established in 2014 in Delaware.
